Organic Acid Corrosion Inhibitor

Corrosion of materials by organic acids is complicated by the virtually unlimited number of possible compounds. The corrosion of metals by organic acid is often confounded by trace impurities such as oxygen and metallic salts. Often the acids are not handled as pure products but as mixtures with inorganic acids, salts, a wide variety of organic solvents, and in mixtures with other organic acids. They have odors that vary from sharp like formic and acetic acid, to rancid like butyric acid (butter) or even worse, smell like sweaty goats - caproic acid. Organic Acid Corrosion Inhibitors are one of the five ways besides material selection, design, cathodic protection and coatings, to protect materials against corrosion. Corrosion testing in organic acid media can be either difficult or misleading, mainly because of the effect of impurities.

Organic Corrosion Inhibitors are widely used in industry because of their effectiveness at wide range of temperatures, compatibility with protected materials, and good solubility in water, low costs and relatively low toxicity. Organic corrosion inhibitors adsorb on the surface to form protective film which displace water and protect it against deteriorating. Effective organic corrosion inhibitors contain nitrogen, oxygen, sulphur and phosphorus with lone electron pairs as well can contain structural moieties with pi-electrons that interact with metal favouring this adsorption process.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Extends system metal life
  • Saves power and increases heat transfer efficiency
  • Increases glycol life by reducing oxidation
  • Does not affect freeze protection properties of the coolant running
  • Does not form sludge deposits inside the system
  • Avoids leakage and minimizes maintenance jobs
  • Avoids batch losses otherwise due to PHE leakages

Handling Measures
and Precautions

Proper human safety products such as splash goggles, lab coat, vapour respirator, NIOSH approved gloves and boots should be worn while handling and applying chemicals. Splashes on the skin should be washed off with water immediately. In case of splashing into the eyes, flush them with fresh water and obtain medical attention. Should not be injected.

Should be stored in original containers away from heat, direct sunlight. Store in a cool dry place. Please refer label and SDS for details.
