Dissolved oxygen at high temperature and high pressure in boiler is extremely corrosive and may lead to localized pitting and premature boiler tube failure or excessive boiler feed water leaks. Oxygen corrosion can be severe, especially to mild steel with higher temperatures.

It is also responsible for pH buffering and reducing alkalinity of the feed water.
